Well, Mister Komui made a time machine but it didn't work as he intended, which is why we're here until they fix it.

...This guy's got some weird hobbies, and a lotta time on his hands. I didn't think his machine would bring so many people, though!

I've asked him the same thing, and all he said was something about it being the best way to observe early human life or something like that. [Alfred just...shrugs sheepishly. His alien friend is very weird.]
