"those who aren't busy being born are busy dying." - Bob Dylan

It's the end of the year again. The vibe during this period of time of year is one where it's acceptable to just kinda mentally check out. I look forward to late December every year as it's probably the most laidback time all year!

So, just like for 2006, I've set a new year's resolution. Remember when I wrote that I've decided to switch careers out of mental health work at some point? Of course you do! Well, an important discovery was made since I came to that decision. I spent this fall taking an introduction to film course at the nearby community college. My desire stemmed from a regret that I never took a film course during college and never learned the basics. That was my only intention when I registered. As I took the course which required me to think about film analysis on a regular basis, I found myself getting more and more into it; I reached a point where I didn't want to stop. It reminded me that film is my absolute passion on this earth, my reason for waking up in the morning. I began to wonder if I could, pragmatically, find a way to switch into it.

My answer came when I learned about the editing process. What I learned is that everything on film, video, or digital is now, post millenium, edited on one of two editing softwares. From lavish Hollywood productions to local production houses and your local news station. This got me thinking. In addition, I was also fascinated by the creativity required in editing. The job of the editor is to take all of the footage and figure out how to best tell the story using it.

Anyway, my goal for 2007 is to learn the software used to edit and by December have made at least two short films from script to edit. Thanks to the hands-on production classes at the local college, where county resident tuition rates are a miracle, this goal is very feasible. It will probably be late 2008 at the earliest that I'll be at a point to start looking for jobs as a professional editor. Thanks to some tips, about where to network locally, from the department chairman at school I also feel that I have something to start to work with.

More to come on this in future entries... Never thought I'd be looking to switch careers in my late '20's but this is what I'm hoping to do!
