Why Marriage?

Sep 15, 2005 10:45

So, a couple of people replied to my earlier post about potentially getting married at AnimeBoston saying that they thought that the 1913 law (originally meant to prevent biracial marriage, now being used to prevent same-sex marriage) preventing out of state weddings for people from states who don't support their weddings is still in effect and ( Read more... )

I shouldn't have read this. It just gets me angry that there's laws against it, that people haven't recognized yet. And I see a large similarity between the treatment of blacks 60 years ago vs the treatment of gay/lesbians now. In 60 years everyone will look at one another and say, "Why were we so stupid?"

I wish I could say something good to cheer you up and give you another round of hope. Unfortuntely you know too much. I can say that if I had a country that you guys would be head of family affairs and be able to not only get married but renew your vows every day, if you wanted. In fact, you may be the only people I let marry. Helping my mom set up weddings at her hotel gets me depressed and kinda jealous. Normally the bride is a beautifull.....18 or 19 yearold. And while yes, I adore my boyfriend and we've been together probably longer than that couple getting married, I can't help but think of myself too young and too naive, what makes her differnt? So maybe that means I'm for gay marriage and less for heterosexual marriage x_X

Good point and very true. It is sad to see those similarities... I thought that we (as a nation and as human beings) would learn to accept and get on with their own lives rather than controlling those who look at life differently or choose differently.

Seriously x_x;;; You realize that like when our parents were in school they were like, "BLACKS BAD! They're at the other school! Throw rocks at them!" and everyone agreed. And flash forward to today where I can't imagine or believe that anyone would think that. What would high school have been like without my co-editor Crystal?! O_o;;; What the fuck? Then here we are and people are teaching us a marriage is between man and woman and all that jazz.

What we need is stronger marriage like...rules for heterosexuals (so we can stop abusing them X_x) and legalize gay marriage. Then everyone is on the same playing field.

And yeah, I have no idea what the rules for heterosexuals should be. Probably that they should have a real ceremony and show proof of planning it or something. I'm just trying to think of ways to prevent drunken marriages in Las Vegas without out-lawing Vegas itself.

The only problem with that is not everybody who wants to get married wants to have a ceremony. Simply heading down to the courthouse isn't reserved for shotgun weddings or people who are drunk. As someone who is currently planning a wedding, I can say that michiru_kou is dead on about how expensive weddings are and there are times when I'd rather just throw it all to the wind and head to the courthouse instead.

Yeah, that's the reason that can't work. There should just be some way to prove it wasn't some drunken idea that'll just waste time x_x
