Jim had never thought he'd have to plan his best friend's funeral. There was a part of him that will never believe Bones was really gone. It was the part that got him through everything and made it so he could be there for Athena and his crew.

He was glad Brian had been with him so he wouldn't lose himself. Seeing his best friend lowered into the cold ground had been too much for him, and he seriously considered getting drunk and finding the fastest car he could find. However, Brian had been there to stop him.

Jim would be forever grateful for him stopping his reckless behavior.

He was in the middle of dreaming of his best friend again when he heard noises coming from somewhere in the house Starfleet had rented for them. Opening his eyes, he wiped away the tears in his eyes and sighed. Another dream about something that would never be.

Pushing himself out of bed, Jim grabbed a t-shirt and pair of sweatpants before putting them on. He ruffled his hair and went out to see what Brian was doing.

"You're not going to burn the house down, are you?" he asked with a small smile.

Brian coughed a bit as some of the pancake mix he had just put into the bowl poofed up into his face. Waving the floury smoke away, he then added some water and a few eggs before mixing it all together. Once he had, he then turned on the stove burner and set a pan on it just as Jim came in.

Looking over at him, he laughed before reaching up to brush his hair off his forehead, which sent some of the flour mix up into the air again.

"I'm going to try my best not too," he told him with a laugh. "Making mini-pancakes and bacon."

He mixed the batter a bit more and then ladled several small spoonfuls into the pan. As the pancakes started to cook, he looked over at him.

"How did you sleep?"

Jim looked at what Brian was doing and found himself laughing too. "I'll be sure to have the fire retardant ready in case something goes wrong," he said just as he noticed there was coffee brewing.

Going over the the cabinet, he grabbed two mugs and sat them next to the maker. He then stared at it, acting as if that would make it brew faster. Jim was about to check the settings when Brian asked his question. Looking over at him, he shrugged.

"I had that dream again. The one where Bones and Athena have all those kids, and I'm visiting them on Earth."

He sighed then and went back to watching the coffee brew. Jim wasn't sure why he continued to dream about that but it seemed to be the one dream that continued to occur, And all it did was remind him off all the things his best would never be able to do.

"I'm starting to miss my daily sex dreams," he said with a dry laugh.

Brian tried to act like he was offended by that, but he couldn't and ended up laughing instead. "That might not be a bad idea," he told him.

He checked the bacon while Jim got out the mugs, looking over at him when he told him about the dream he'd had. As he talked, Brian felt his throat tighten, knowing how hard this was for him. So he went over and wrapped his arms around him from behind, drawing him against his chest.

He wished he could tell him that it would be all right, but he knew that Jim would miss him for the rest of his life. Instead, he just reached up and ran his fingers through his hair.

"Who needs daily sex dreams when you can have daily sex instead," he asked, trying to match Jim's tone of voice.

Suddenly, he smelled something burning.

"Oh shit," he said, rushing and grabbing the pan off the stovetop. The pancakes were runny but smoking. Just perfect, he though, shaking his head with a laugh. "Think maybe I should just order us breakfast from the diner?"

When Brian made his comment about daily sex, Jim raised his eyebrows and started to laugh. Shaking his head, he leaned against the counter as he continued to wait for the coffee to finished. "If I could find someone worthy of my daily sex acts, I would be having daily sex," he said with a snort.

As the pancakes started to smoke, Jim had to turn around so Brian wouldn't see him laughing. After a moment, she dared to look over his shoulder at the other man and nodded. "I think getting breakfast from the diner will not only save the house but save your ego," he said with a smirk.

Jim went over to the drawer where the takeout menus were stored and pulled the one out for the local diner. It didn't take him long to decide on some waffles with fruit and a side of hash browns. He then handed the menu over to Brian.

"I don't see any burnt food listed, but I'm sure you'll find something to your liking," he said with a grin.

Brian snorted and rolled his eyes at that. "I'm sure you could find plenty of volunteers if you looked," he told him before pausing for a moment. "And closer than you think."

He then turned his attention back to the pancakes, sighing that he hadn't even managed to cook one batch before they had burned. Obviously, he was a better officer than he was a chef. Putting the pan into the sink, he looked over at Jim as he got out the takeout menus.

"Yeah, I don't think Starfleet would appreciate us burning down everything," he said. He then rolled his eyes and took the menu. "Damn, I won't get my daily allowance of charcoal."

After looking over the menu, he decided on some eggs, bacon and hash browns and then went to the comm unit to place the order.

"All right, food should be here in about a half an hour," he told him before pointing to the coffee pot. "At least I know enough not to screw up the coffee."

Jim raised his eyebrows when Brian made his comment about finding someone close. It made him wonder if the other man felt the same way he did. He wanted to know but wasn't sure how to approach the subject. Brian certainly wasn't a woman in a random bar.

Pushing his thoughts aside, he laughed when Brian rolled his eyes. "If you want charcoal that badly, we can go to the store later," he said with a grin and laugh.

It felt really nice to laugh again. He missed Bones, of course, but having Brian there was helping a lot.

Once the other man had placed his order, Jim grabbed their mugs and went over to the coffee maker. "Lets hope so," he said as he threw Brian a wink.

He poured them each a cup and got the sugar and cream out. Once they had their coffee, Jim went over to the table and picked the the PADD sitting there to look through the morning's news. There were a couple messages from Starfleet in his inbox but he ignored them for the time being.

"This fells nice and normal," he said as he looked at Brian. "Thank you for staying."

Brian snorted and shook his head in amusement. "Nah. I think I'll forgo the charcoal today. The eggs and bacon will be fine. Although if you want to go to the store, we can. I don't mind."

Actually, it might be a good idea if they got out for a bit, he thought.

After he was done with placing the order, he went back over to join Jim at the table, where he put some cream and sugar into his coffee. It got him some guff sometimes that he didn't take it black, but he preferred it this way. As he took a few sips, he looked over at Jim and gave him a smile, reaching over to touch his hand.

"Of course. You needed someone, and I care a lot about you. There was no way I was going to let you spend this time alone."

Jim shook his head and put some sugar and creamer in his coffee. "I don't need anything from the store," he said before smirking. "But if you keep burning the food, we might have to go tomorrow. Maybe you should let me try making dinner tonight. I saw a grill outside and some steaks in the fridge unit. I can grill those."

When Brian touched his hand, Jim found himself turning his hand over so he could wrap his fingers around the other man's hand. It felt nice to have this sort of contact with someone else. The last couple weeks had been rough but it was nice having Brian there with him.

Giving his hand a squeeze, he smiled. "I care about you too," he quietly admitted.

Jim knew he was treading a dangerous area with what he was about to do, and it scared him. If he were to do what his heart wanted, he could lose Brian as a friend, and he wasn't sure he could handle losing someone else. However, he was tired of pretending he didn't have feelings for the other man so he did the only thing he knew to do, and leaned over to press his lips to Brian's.

Brian looked at him. "I'm not that bad with that food. But...maybe it would be a good idea if you cooked tonight. Steaks sound great. It's been a while since I had a good grilled steak."

His hand continued to rest over his, and when Jim turned his hand over, he smiled and tightened his hold. He knew that he had been through a lot, so he was glad that he could be there for him. And when he admitted that he cared for him as well, he felt his heart pound a bit in his chest.

He wanted to say more to him, to tell him that it went beyond just caring about him as a friend, but before he could, Jim was leaning over to him. And the next thing he knew, his lips were on his.

Jim was kissing him.

Without hesitation, Brian returned his kiss, reaching up with his free hand to cup Jim's head, slowly deepening the kiss. It felt amazing, just as he had thought it might.

When they finally pulled apart to breathe, he gave him a smile. "Been thinking about doing that with you for a while."

Jim really hoped Brian didn't punch him. Even though he was pretty good with fighting, he knew Brian was better. Plus, didn't want to ruin their friendship. But, god, kissing the other man was incredible. It was unlike anything he had ever experienced.

When they pulled apart, Jim gave him a smile. "Same here," he murmured.

Moving closer, he kissed Brian again. This time, he slowly teased his mouth open and groaned when their tongues touched. He tasted like coffee and it was perfect. Actually, everything about kissing him was.

When they broke apart, Jim rested his forehead against Brian's and stared into his eyes. "There's a lot more I want to do with you but I think our food is almost here," he said.

When Jim kissed him again, Brian smiled against his lips before letting his mouth open to deepen the kiss. God, he hadn't expected this.

Every since he'd known Jim, he'd been attracted to him, but he'd never pursued anything with him for a number of reasons. Starting with the fact that he had originally been his superior.

But now they were the same rank. And they were kissing, and it was amazing.

When they finally parted, he looked at him with a grin. "There's a lot I want to do with you too," he told him. "But food would be good. Make sure we have enough strength."

Just then the doorchime went off, so he went to answer. Once he had the food, he brought it back to the kitchen and set it down.

"Definitely better than burnt pancakes," he laughed.

When Brian said they needed their strength, Jim let out a groan as his mind wandered with all the wonderful things they could do. He was tempted to ask what he had in mind but then the door chime went off so Jim moved back so Brian could get up and answer it.

As he did, Jim got up and grabbed the container of orange juice out of the fridge unit and poured two glasses. He sat then down on the table and smiled when Brian came back with the food. "Smells good," he said with a laugh before he softly nudged him.

Jim sat down at the table and took out the containers of food. They had included silverware and napkins so he didn't have to get up to get any. After giving Brian his container, Jim set his own in front of himself and opened the lid.

"Gods, this looks so good. It's nice to have real food again," he said before taking a bite.

Brian snorted when Jim nudged him and nudged him back before sitting down at the table. He took his container from the other man and opened it up. It really did smell good.

"I should have just done this in the first place like I thought," he said with a laugh before picking up a piece of bacon and taking a bite. He then nodded at him with a smile. "Yeah. Replicated food just isn't the same. Sometimes, I wish that they would have Starfleet engineers work on replicators rather than better engines."

After finishing off the piece of bacon, he took a drink of his orange juice. It was good to see Jim happy again, especially after all he had been through.

"So what do you want to do when we're done with breakfast?" he asked.

When Brian said he should have ordered the food first, Jim reached under the table and ran his hand up and down the other man's leg. "Don't worry about. You were trying to do something nice," he said with a smile. He then nodded. "And you're right but I think Starfleet is more interested in going fast than making its officers happy."

With his fork in hand, Jim cut a piece of waffle off and dipped it in the whipped cream before putting it in his mouth. It was the most delicious thing he had tasted in a long time. "Gods, that is good," he said with a moan.

Picking up his glass of orange juice, Jim took a drink and raised his eyebrows at Brian's question. After putting down his glass, he took another bite of his waffles and pretended to ponder what he wanted to do, even though he already knew the answer.

"I think I'm going to take your cock in my mouth and suck on it until you come," he said before taking another bite of his food. "After that, I think I'm going to bend you over the bed and fuck you. If that's okay with you."

Brian suppressed a groan when Jim started to touch him that way. Instead, he just smiled at him, glad he understood why he had wanted to cook for him.

"Guess they figure if we're going fast, we're going to be more focused on what we're doing than what we're eating. Or something."

He ate several bites of his eggs and hash browns, the sound of Jim's moan sending a shock straight to his groin. He wanted to hear that moan when they were together, so when he started talking about what he wanted to do to him after they finished eating, he closed his eyes, his cock twitching a bit and starting to harden.

"That's more than okay with me," he told him, his voice rough as he looked at him over his glass before taking a drink of orange juice. Reaching over, he took his hand and tugged it over to rest over his crotch so he could feel just how okay that was.
