Object of mild curiosity right now: Zubin Varla.
Brutus.
Rushdie.
He's just blowing me away in this production of JCS. I mean, really, Judas is the most interesting character in the play after the obvious. He's the first person you hear, his perspective you hear first. He has the best lines, the best melodies and oh lord such great political personal angst.
And while Zubin Varla has this beautifully timbred voice, he's so not afraid to wring every iota of desperation and rawness and distress from the words. Liek woah. Can't help but feel what he feels. And god just the way he plays the suicide is brilliant, the gasps, the breaths, the disintegration of his voice with realisation. I was walking along the underground way from Galeries Victoria to Town Hall Station the other day as it played and argh I could totally see it ... the slinging of the rope, the ... well, you know.
I could see it. And it's taken me all this while to realise I've never actually seen this musical staged. The movie doesn't count. *dismisses*
Urgh, have to get ready for family lunch. Links for further investigation and reading.
... why you chose me for your crime, your foul bloody crime ...
