The Seven Commandments All Video Games Should Obey. The Kingdom Hearts PS2 franchise only breaks one, afaik, which is pretty good. A sprawling world, Traverse Town is not.
I'm supposed to be writing a paper on the renegotiation of gender roles in Japan through early modern literature... and instead I'm completely academically fired up about
The Forbidden Kingdom. Ironically, I haven't found anyone else who liked it, so I may be biased by my obsession with Jet Li. However, that being said, if you know your kung fu movies and/or Chinese mythology, it's pretty much an all-star movie of amazing. In general, it has a very Karate Kid-feel to it, with the added bonus of time actually passing and a journey that doesn't take five seconds to complete... as well as the values of duty, just revenge, master-disciple-relationship, etc. Oh, also Jet Li and Jackie Chan fighting over who gets to teach the kid (and what to teach him). It's definitely an "American" movie, but it's clearly made with love for kung fu films.
Also, I can now recognize both stars by their fighting style alone. Which I find kind of disturbing in an awesome way. Makes me want to rewatch Fist of Legend.
