1. I would do a very basic problem to start with and start with a join change unknown problem. My problem would be the following: Sarah had 13 cats. How many more cats does she need to have 20 cats altogether? I would start with this problem because it is very basic and very similiar to the join start unknown problem. It would be very easy to compare the join change unknown problem to the join start unknown problem because if you understand how to do the join change unknown problem, it would be much easier to show the join start unknown problem. Both of them involve counting up the the result number. I would start with slightly lower numbers so she could focus on more how to solve the problem. Once she understood how to solve the problem better I would use much higher numbers because she is able to count up to 50. If Sarah directly modeled my problem, then I would say to her, "That's one way to do it but let's try another way". Then I would show her how to use her fingers to count up.
2. Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is a program that has been developed to help teachers increase their understanding when it comes to helping to teach their students. This is used to connect what the students do to learn problems to the concepts and operations they learn in school. It was developed by the following education researchers: Thomas Carpenter, Elizabeth Fennema, Penelope Peterson, Megan Loef Franke, and Linda Levi. There are two main parts to this process. The first one is that students bring prior experiences along with them before they even learn math processes in school. The process says that their prior knowledge should serve as a foundation for when it comes to teaching math, especially during elementary school. To be able to do this, it is very important to assess the way that the students solve problems. The second part to consider is making sure to intertwine both number facts and how to solve problems. Overall to be a great teacher using this process, you need to incorporate both number facts that students can be drilled on as well as problem solving so that students know how to do math rather than just to learn memorization skills.
