rumor of johnny depp playing L in 2014 american death note remake...
i have really mixed feelings about it. granted, it's only a rumor, and clearly he's too old for the role anyway. but -- what if? my husband was appalled at the notion: "no, no nono no! bad idea!" why? "he'll overdo it. he always does. L is very subtle."
i have to admit he is right.
the best news is that when at the earliest stages hollywood was forcing the director (shane black) to americanize the film by softening it and making it more "mass appeal" -- which included dispensing with the shinigami -- the director adamantly refused to do so.
still, this will inevitable be mostly western film. zac efron is rumored to be cast as light yagami. as for L... an american actor?
i've been trying to imagine what it would look like. world's top detective, enigmatic L. quirky, socially awkward, nerdy, quiet sugarholic who always sits with his knees drawn up to his chest, constantly eats sweets without gaining an ounce of weight and never sleeps. in live action films, kenichi matsuyama portrayed him so perfectly that he might have set the bar too high for anyone else. with all respect to mr. depp, it seems a daunting if not completely impossible to surpass matsuken in this role. the only advantage i see is that with j.d. cast in this film it would bring new, larger audiences in, possibly popularizing the original death note more. but is it worth it?
