Commedia dell'Arte

Hello again, everyone. This week's entry focuses on commedia dell'arte. This style of theatre dates back to 16th century Italy, and utilized different masks for different characters.

Check out some of these sites:

This site is run by a modern commedia troupe. The site also includes information on the characters and a brief history of commedia.

Home of Newman's Commedia Mask Company in Oregon. Real leather masks that look really nice (but are kind of expensive).

Webpage for Semmerling and Schaefer Mask Studios, based in Chicago. These masks are very nice as well, and a bit cheaper than Newman's

Allison Williams and Todd Espeland are a husband and wife commedia troupe known as Commedia Zuppa. They perform commedia, teach commedia, and make commedia masks. (Just our luck then that they are coming to AQ to teach the mask class, which will be sweet...)

Site of the Accademia dell'Arte, a school in Arezzo, Italy that teaches commedia, contemporary mask, and other forms of theatre. Learn commedia in the country where it started!

Commedia troupe from Boston that bills itself as "the greatest commedia dell'arte troupe in the entire world". Well, I can't comment on that claim, but  I can say that their website is worth taking a look, especially in the "commedia resources" section.

Enjoy!

P.S. In future posts, you may see a little cat in the mood section. Her name is Arlecchina, and her mood may not necessarily reflect my own. If she's good, I may let her stick around; you never know...
