I am not a good writer, but I think I'm a pretty good reader. I read a lot, of anything I can find, from classical literature to cheesy grocery store romances to fanfiction to cereal boxes. There are a few things that throw me out of a story faster than I can blink, and I can't figure out if it's me being intolerant or what, because some of my favorite authors, professional and amateur, make these mistakes. Like saying 'he' instead of 'him' (Joe wanted to join he and Carol for the evening - as soon as I see that, I lose whatever thread I've picked up in the story). Or over-used phrases like 'soft smile' (GOD, I hate that, and I don't know why - it just makes me cringe) and 'blown pupils.'
On the one hand, I wish I could just overlook the things that irritate me and love the story anyway. On the other hand, when I find a story with none of my pet peeves, I'm so happy that it feels worth it, being so picky.
