So... I promised this fic AGES ago. Sometime before my school-forced hiatus. But I'm sloooowly going through 'unfinished business' folder and here it is. Firefly/Doctor Who crossover. Because it seems like the right things to do :P

Title: Princess
Fandom: Doctor Who/Firefly
Warnings: hmmm... a tiiiiiny hint of slash. Really small one.
Notes: Originally written for tamingthemuse prompt Ankara (yes, that long ago!), like the Ankara cat. Takes place... somewhere in the timeline of Firefly, pre-Serenity, and after Tooth and Claw as for DW. I took the liberty of adding the knowledge about the kittens from 'Gridlock' and making New New York a kingdom now. (and I'm x-posting it like whoah... :P)
Thanks to wildannuette for the beta work! *hugs and loves*

River had been hopping around Serenity for days before it happened. She danced in the cargo bay, she sang for Kaylee and Inara, had a knife throwing contest with Jayne and actually let him win. She ambushed Book with hugs three times, nearly giving the poor preacher a heart attack.

Simon was thrilled to see her in such a delightful mood, all rosy cheeked and smiling. Of course, she was going on about things nobody understood, like healers, travellers and lost princesses, but he wasn‘t too worried. Usually River-speech was pretty clear after a while, when the world kindly caught up with his amazing little sister. You just needed to pay attention to what she said.

So when the odd, scratching noise announced the appearance of what seemed to be an old blue box, Simon really wasn’t that surprised at seeing his sister (in her best dress, the pink one with the flowers) skipping closer to it and knocking on the door before Mal and Zoë even pulled their guns out of their holsters.

“River, get the hell away from that!” Mal’s barked out order was met with a wink (a wink!) and a finger put on lips.

“Shh... Captain should stay quiet. We don’t want to scare the visitors.” She smiled and added in her ‘I’m so much smarter than you’ tone, “That would be very rude.”

That’s when the door to the blue ‘Police Box’ opened, and all hell broke loose.

A white flash sprang from the inside and leapt over River, who shrieked and crouched quickly. The... thing dashed up the stairs and disappeared through the door to the dining area. Simon instantly ran over to move his baby sister away from the danger, nearly tripping along the way, and actually falling on his ass when River abruptly stood up again and knocked him over, laughing all the while. She started dancing around the blue box, giggling quietly to thoughts only she could hear while her brother scrambled gracelessly on his feet.

“I told you to hold her!”, they heard a male voice, coming from the inside.

“The bloody furball scratched my face when we landed!”, was the response of an indignant woman.

“Would you stop referring to her as a furball? She’s a ‘she’!”

Zoë and Mal exchanged looks.

“Go check if that did any damage, I’ll deal with this.”

Zoë nodded and promptly went up the stairs.

“You didn’t whine as much when a werewolf nearly made an appetizer out of you!”

“Oh, shut your face, you’re not the one attacked by a rabid cat with a pedigree worth more than Queen Victoria’s!“

A short man in a brown striped suit and a cute blond in a pink skirt emerged from the box. Both were amusingly unaware of the world around them - until Mal unlocked the trigger. The universal sound of a firearm being prepared to shoot caught their attention remarkably quickly.

“Hello,” said the man, smiling brightly. “There’s no need to shoot, we were just looking for a cat. Rose lost her.”

The girl punched him in the arm, “I did not!”

“You were holding her, you’re not holding her now, you don’t know where she is, clearly - you lost her.”

“You smug little...”

“Whoa!”

The couple looked at Mal, all polite expectation, not afraid at all. “Now. Who the hell are you and how did you get on my ship? Cause I don’t recall taking more passengers on board.”

“We’re just passing by... captain, I take it?” The man wasn’t even looking at Mal, just staring around the cargo bay. “Is this... Rose, look, it’s a Firefly! A genuine Firefly!”

“And,” River butted in, mimicking the stranger’s accent, “We also have two genuine Browncoats on board, Doctor.”

“River!” Simon frowns at her, receiving only an eyeroll in return.

“Really? That’s fantastic!” The man’s enthusiasm was plain odd. “You hear that, Rose? Browncoats are one of the most famous soldiers in the history of the universe and we get to meet two of them. Of course, they did lose the war, but I still say they’d been simply outnumbered... hold on, how do you know who I am? Have we met before?”

A horrible yowl stopped her from having to answer. The cat darted down the stairs, chased by Zoë and Wash, and went straight for River who calmly opened her arms and caught the white kitten.

“You’re safe now, your highness,” she whispered to the white, shaking creature. “Don’t you know royalty when you see them?” She huffed, glaring at Wash and his wife, who, for once, looked completely baffled.

“Oh, there you go, at least someone appreciates the crowned princess of New New York,” The Doctor came closer and bowed before River, or more accurately, the frightened cat with one eye blue and one brown.

“Yeah, whatever, Doctor, I still say that she might grow up to be the queen of New New York but she’s one spoilt brat now.” Rose was examining a scratch on her right hand and left cheek, not caring at all what the little princess might tell about such disrespectful behaviour once they finally get her home.

“Forgive the turbulences, your highness, I didn’t realize it would be that bad. We’ll be on our way now, is that okay?” He reached his hands out to the princess and smiled. The princess mewled softly, licked River’s hand and gracefully hopped to the Doctor.

“Sorry, captain,” he turned towards Mal. “We didn’t mean to intrude, but taking on passengers tends to get complicated from time to time.”

“I can relate,” Mal muttered. “Ow! Watcha poking me for?” He scowled at Simon.

“Sorry, captain, complicated passengers tend to be twitchy. And like to sleep alone.”

“Now, don’t you...” Mal didn’t get to finish that thought, and probably luckily for Simon.

“Weeeelll, now it’s high time for me and Rose to take her highness back to her parents,” he winked at River, “It was nice meeting you all, hope you have a good life and watch out for the Alliance troops, they tend to get nasty after the Second War of Independence,” he added in a conspiratorial whisper. “Hmm... I’d get nasty after a lost war, too. Oh, well,” Doctor smiled. “Thanks for your help!”

And with that, Rose waved at them and the Doctor closed the door of the TARDIS. Ten seconds later they were gone.

“I want to be a princess, too,” said River after a moment of perfect silence in the cargo bay. She laughed and ran to tell Kaylee all about royalty, family lines, nobility and stories of kings and queens.
