Dear lit_gal,

I ♥ you very much for creating tamingthemuse, but that was one prompt from hell.

Hugs&kisses,
AJ Clover.

Srsly, osmosis? Osmosis?? It made me write a Jess-fic.

Well, better Jess than Jo! I liked Jess.

Title: Knowledge
Fandom: Supernatural
Prompt: Osmosis
Rating: Safe for all.
Warnings: None. It's even spoiler free. Unless you haven't seen the Pilot.
Summary: Jessica thinks about what she knows and doesn't know - about life and about Sam.
Notes: Criticize me gently - it's my first SPN fic :]

Jessica knows how to cook and she’s an excellent baker. She knows how to drive a truck and a bus and knows that she absolutely can’t drive in smaller cars - five accidents under her belt taught her that. She can sleep with her eyes open on Professor Maguire’s lectures and appear completely absorbed in her words, too. She’s fully capable of doing her hair and brushing her teeth at the same time, but she can never decide which shoes to wear in less then 10 minutes. She knows and understands words like osmosis, membrane and turgor pressure and knows why they are so important to her biology studies. She realizes she’s smart and fun and she can get anyone into an interesting conversation; she loves to chat, after all.

But she doesn’t really know why Sam, her open and trustworthy Sam, gets so clammed up the moment he word ‘family’ enters the conversation. Well, not exactly. Sam knows everything about her sisters and brothers, about her parents and her favorite nieces and nephews. He knows all about Christmas traditions at her house and about Easter Egg hunting in her grandparents big house. He actually learnt their names!

He only averts her eyes and stares into the walls, or changes the subject (sometimes skillfully, sometimes sloppily like a child) when she asks about his family. The way Sam goes still for a second before he relaxes and lies or starts a different conversation, or even asks her about something that’s bound to piss her off, it all makes her wonder. She feels weird stuck between love and suspicions.

She’s naturally curious and asks questions, because she wants to know all about him. Where Sam comes from and how he got to Stanford, who are his parents and if he has any siblings.

“My mom died when I was a baby, Jess. I have an older brother. He, uh, works with my dad. Speaking of families, I recorded The Sopranos for you last night, when you were at Susan’s. How is she, anyway? Still bitching about the crimes of men towards the oppressed female population of the world?”

Jess looks at her Sam curiously and sees something in his eyes that wasn’t there before, something odd. As if Sam was afraid to tell her something, or maybe just stubborn. Maybe he didn’t trust her yet. That thought, in turn, makes her feel a little insecure.

The next day Sam buys a stuffed elephant for her niece, Mary Ann. Of course, the little brat loves her new toy - and Sam, too.

“I was looking for one just like that, Sam, really, you’re the best boyfriend aunt Jess ever had!”

Jess decides that somebody so warmhearted simply can’t be hiding any deep dark secrets in his past.

***

The moment Dean Winchester comes into their life she realizes that she needs to talk to Sam and seriously. Sadly, she doesn’t really have time for that. Sam abruptly decides he’s going with his brother and Jessica understands, she really does, but she wishes she could talk to him.

While baking his favorite cookies, she’s thinking of arguments she’ll need to make him open up to her. She adds extra chocolate chips, because Sam loves them that way.
