Waiting for Hawaii 5-0 season 2

Aug 30, 2011 14:38

Well, last night was the episode where Danny was exposed to sarin (lol, I nearly typed "sauron") and Steve was all worried about him. Lord, that scene was just wonderful, the way Steve seemed to run at top speed to Danny's side, despite the fact that Danny was not that far away from him, the say he helped Danny out of his vest and looked at him in ( Read more... )

I am concerned about what I call the "Castlization" of the show. People have been talking about this for awhile now: that CBS told the show to cool down the bromance and add "love interests", ostensibly to compete with Castle. Whether this is true, I don't know, but it's one of the theories.

Me too. That is what truly has me concerned. I want to wait and see but given that they've obviously made big attempts to steer away from the bromantic angle in the past doesn't make me as worry free as I'd like to be.

When UPN told TPTB on The Sentinel to cool down that aspect of the show (though the word 'bromance' hadn't been coined yet) what we got was a strained relationship between the two characters and stuff that headed into partner betrayal territory, when bringing in a love interest character didn't work.

I know it's all about the bottom line with tv shows but I still just don't get why they'd want to make Hawaii 5-0 more like Castle. They could change its time slot and put it opposite less popular competition, they could do other things if Castle seems to be beating it in the ratings. I have to wonder, who looks at a show with two male leads and says, let's make it more like that show with a male and female lead? I know... people who aren't creative producers and writers, that's who.

Yeah: the guys in suits. Someone, I think on LiveJournal, said that turning 5-0 into Castle will not gain Castle viewers, it will lose 5-0 viewers (or something like that, it was a while ago). I think that makes sense. Once the season starts, we will see what they're doing, and I hope that at that point it won't be too late to save the show. : - \

I saw that post on LJ too and I agree. I've watched Castle and Nathan Fillion is lovely but the male/female tv partner dynamic isn't my thing. What I get from Hawaii 5-0 is. And yes, I want more of it.

I can watch either, but 5-0 was started with one and it worked--they shouldn't try to change it to the other.

See, I like both styles of dynamics; fortunately, I have a VCR, so I can watch Castle and H50.

That said, I don't want only one flavor -- male/female -- of TV partner. And, if I had to choose, it would be the male/male partner dynamic. Two same-sex partners (I loved Cagney and Lacey, too) can banter and play off each other without having the overt UST shoved in our faces by TPTB. I like the banter and snarky give-and-take. I'd prefer it even if I saw 'only' friendship, and not covert slash. Because there's nothing 'only' about friendship, and I don't want to see it devolve into nothing more than a working partnership. Whether or not TPTB show it, I think both Steve and Danny would be hurt by that.

Thank god for fanfic.

That's certainly my feeling on the issue. See, I started watching Castle 'cos of Nathan Fillion -- really enjoyed Firefly and Serenity. I know I'm in the minority of Castle watchers in that a ride on the Castle/Beckett Twu Wuv Twain didn't move me in the slightest, but a Castle/Beckett ship was the last thing I was interested in ( ... )

Well said. I am hoping that if it does turn out badly that fans will speak up, and we can still save the show.

As usual, Bert, you've said it all and very well. I am worried too. I came for the bromance and that's why I stayed. I occassionally watched Castle, since there wasn't much else to choose from in its time slot, but the characters didn't grab me that much (I was more interested in Castle's daughter and mother than I was Beckett and her co-workers) and I always look for the buddy type shows over the male/female dynamic so when I found out about the stuff happening on H-50, I all too eagerly changed the channel.

(Side question: do you also find it interesting that not only are we getting Lauren German who acted with Richard, the actor playing the new gov., Richard T. Jones, appeared on the Terminator series playing a guy named "James Ellison." Again, there are a zillion reasons to cross over OWW with H-50.)

"When we get to the point where we're getting carguments with Steve/Lori instead of Steve/Danny," writing on the wall or not, I will not be watching. I'll be throwing up.
