So I woke up this morning with the Military channel -- Navy SEAL Training episodes. I've seen this, or something similar, a while back, since it's somewhat similar to Ranger training. It is actual footage of the training that SEALs go through, rigorous, painful, cold, mentally challenging to become the best of the best. And the Steve McGarrett successfully completed this training, which provides good insight into his character.
After one week, the class is down from 83 to 50 students. Swimming in freezing water in nothing but shorts and a t-shirt and swim fins, carrying a huge inflated boat over their heads for a mile, things like that, have cut down the class, leaving men who have endured without giving up. They learn to work as a team, to push past the pain, because it means survival.
Week one, says one of the candidates, "was a kick in the nuts." They have a weekend off, get checked out medically and the objective of week two is to prepare for "hell week" -- which will be much worse, obviously, than the first week. Also, the program shows the instructors and their motivations for how they train and why.
One exercise is to row an inflatable boat to shore against big, sharp rocks. The potential for injury is great and the team must work together. The guys who win are proud, smiling and stating, "second place is first loser!"
