Laughing until I'm wheezy

Given a choice, I watch absolutely everything with subtitles on. I have a mild auditory processing problem, and if people have an accent, I miss anywhere from a third to half of what they say. Or more--I tried watching the UK version of The Office and did not understand 80% of it. And I couldn't figure out entire conversations in Parade's End.

I no longer have to watch Sherlock with subtitles....but only because I've memorized so much of it. I'm dreading watching S3, because there's no way I'm not streaming it as it airs in the UK, and nobody turns the captions on during livestreams, and his deduction monologues will be totally fucking lost on me.

Another advantage to captions, of course, is that you can talk during whatever you're watching. Which the bunch of us do. Nearly constantly. But they weren't used to watching Who with captions, so they giggled at "Doctor Who theme plays" at the beginning. Or "whooshing sound" for the TARDIS. Or "crowd mumbling." Which is of course just meant to reassure hearing-impaired people that yes, people's lips are moving, but what they're saying isn't important, you're not missing anything.
