susannamoodie & aprilp_katje,
Of all the references I threw out there today, I was the most pleased to see the ones to Henry James used. I thought the whole idea being presented in the strip of knowing things are going on from someone being "with Susan" was very Henry Jamesish. I am delighted to know I have fellow participants in April's Real Blog, who are so well-read.

Right back at you for setting up the Henry James references, howtheduck. Great choice! To me, one of his most maddening moments was in Wings of the Dove, when Kate Croy speculates about what Millie Theale's letters says, and then burns it, unopened!
A friend of mine who did her dissertation on James had, at one time, asked her friends to clue her in whenever they came across a Henry James reference in popular culture or elsewhere. The new Thomas Pynchon novel, Against the Day, has a dog who is reading Princess Casamassima. I'll have to clue her in on this latest round of references--she'll love it! :)

Thanks. My primary objective was to pile up all the Liz complaints from the various commenting message boards and have Paul ignore them all in favour of Liz, but still come to the conclusion he should be with Susan via a totally different means, i.e. Susan does the one very crucial thing which Liz has never done with Paul---say, "I love you." My secondary objective was to create a situation where this "I got a transfer, but I'm messing around with Susan" thing would work. I don't know how the strip will ultimately resolve it. I'll adjust as needed.

aprilp_katje,
I'm glad you liked it. You hinted about it in your Blog entry for the day. I had a good time pulling out all the anti-Paul phrases and of course, West Side Story.

The intervention for Paul was just wonderful, howtheduck. Brilliant use of archival strips and masterful allusions to the hypocrisy of Liz. :)
