So I have a child in my class lets call him double D because well his initials are DD. He wears diapers still, and has had many tests and just doesn’t seem to be able to tell when he needs to go. Nothing seems to bother him at all and in general while he has a serious nature is so off the planet that the serious things he says to us generally turn out with us stifling our smiles.
During the week I had to break up an argument involving this child. It seems that he had started to play hide and seek at lunch time and had two friends that wanted to play. Each day they would line up and he would choose who he would play hide and seek with because in DD’s world hide and seek is a two player game only. As it happens this day there was an argument between his two friends as to who would get to play as DD couldn’t make up his mind. I decided to intervene and sat down with the three of them. As I started to explain that perhaps they could all play hide and seek at the same time with one person being up and the others hiding, the first one found would help find the next and then be up for the next round, I could see DD looking at me like I was a mad woman and it couldn’t possibly work but in the end they all agreed to try my radical new plan.
At the end of the play break I could see this child waiting patiently for me to exit the staff room to go to class, I smiled and tilted my head inquiringly at him “Yes DD?” His face lit up and he gave me two thumbs up and said ……….. “The technique works grrrrrrrreat, mate!!!”
