I had a job interview earlier this week at the first place I had applied to. It's a good place, one I've known about for years and it has been a part of the community I grew up in since I was a small child. I'm happy about this. I'm happy that I didn't fail the interview after almost no preparation (I was camping, what can I say?).
Here's how it went: Interview with the Executive Director (acting as Team Leader until the position is filled), followed by interview with the team of approximately 12 more people all at once. If you've never been interviewed by a group, I can tell you it is quite an experience! I feel like that interview prepared me for almost any future interview I have, because it was not just one person I had to impress... but 13. That wasn't the whole team, there were 2-3 missing. The director told me I did well. I'm still in the running for this job.
Yesterday, however, the director e-mailed me to find out if I'd also be interested in interviewing for a different position that just opened up. In other words, I'm pretty sure she'd be very happy to have me working for the company. The new position is slightly more intense than the other one, but it would also be more directly improving the lives of people in my community. This is something that I am genuinely interested in doing. The only difference in pay would be extra hours for being on-call one night a week until 8pm. Not bad. Though I think this position carries a certain amount of risk that the other one might not. I think I need to interview for it (and interview the other team members as I'm being interviewed) in order to decide if the job is right for me. I like that this new opening is very results-driven, it's based on a proven method (yay science!). I have a lot of thinking to do, but I honestly think I won't be able to decide unless I go through yet another group interview. So... it looks like that is on my agenda. I'm excited and nervous, but I learned A LOT about the types of questions to expect after the last interview. I also know that I will have many more questions I would like answered in regards to this position.
So... I may have a new job by the end of this month. I'm hopeful, but definitely thoughtful about what it would entail. I'd have to set up a sitter for on-call nights, and be ready to go at a moment's notice. I think this is doable. Benefits are good, pay is what I expected, and because it's for a non-profit, I have a chance of having my student loans forgiven over time. This is definitely a huge benefit for me.
