❇ FAQ ❇
While the
IC Guide covers most of the basic mechanics of the game, here is some more OOC information that players might find helpful.
magical pink doors
Yes, your character came through magical pink doors and they are used in the game. Is that really so strange?
is this a community or journal based game?
Communities only! So feel free to reuse any journals that are currently being used in another game.
characters are informed upon arrival
Basically, once a character arrives into Aprigen, they have all the preliminary information necessary at their disposal. The IC Guide will always be there and is the first document they might see once they login. They also will feel as if some of that knowledge has been "implanted" into their brain, so they may feel less "WTF WHERE AM I OMG WHAT AM I DOING" and can immediately start digging for more information.
my character has no name? how did that happen?
As detailed in the
Premise page, when characters first enter into Aprigen, they had to enter their name on the laptop. Once they hit enter, it's taken away from their memory completely. It's like very, very, very, very selective memory loss.
This includes their original name and any known aliases they use. For example, Superman and Clark Kent would be taken away from the character, and he would have to use another name. However, petnames or nicknames that bear little resemblance to the character's original name can be used. So for example, the nickname "Wonder boy" for Hercules (Disney version).
It should be noted that they do not lose any of their memories. All of that is kept intact, and they will remember the names of their friends and loved ones. However, if any of those characters were to appear in the game, they would also forget their name and automatically use the new alias.
so what do they use?
They are given a new name, and that would be what you, the player, chooses. ICly, the new names are just given to them upon arrival. Of course the character can come up/use a completely new "alias/name" like Bob if they want, but whatever name you choose for them will be stuck with them as default.
If you're having issues with coming up names, making a name based off their canon will be allowed. So Natalia could be Natalie. Or go funky and make weird anagrams, like Simon could be Nismo or something weird.
can they use another character's name?
To make things less messy in the future, no, they cannot. However, this is only for canonmates. They could try but it would be rejected. If that canonmate appears in the game, they will not recall the canonmate's name, either, and instead automatically use the alias.
But there's no way we could limit players from choosing any name in case of character name conflicts. That's just silly. So if you end up choosing a name for your character that's the same as a character from a completely different series, don't sweat it. If Character A has Character B's name, and B meets A, B would have no idea that A's alias is actually his own name.
what's this about usernames/online handles?
Another "name" that characters can be referred to by are their online handles, or usernames, that they use through the network. It is quite possible for characters to use these usernames for their own name if it makes enough sense.
These are chosen at random and are given to the character on arrival. They will have no idea what their online handle is until they login to the network. Like when getting a premade account, they will have their username and password ready for them. Their username will be their journalname.
journalnames what?
Due to the nature of the game, we thought it would be interesting and probably easier for the players if the character's journalname was also the username.
This does mean that the journalnames have to be a little restricted.
- They can't have the character's original name in it
- They can't have a canonmate's name in it
Sorry, but that's how the online handles would work. So anything like "stupidflynn" or "gtfofleazaya" wouldn't work. However, using anything that references themselves is fine, like "gurrenleader" or "usestwoswords". Just no specific and obvious names.
what if my character has a canon online handle?
If it doesn't resemble their original name (and it's actually open as a journalname), then it should be okay. So most of the Durarara!! characters could use their online handles both as their alias and/or username. Just be aware that canonmates might find out their real "identity" if they're not careful, that is, be able to put a real face to the name instead of being some ambiguous online person. If canonmates already can place a face to the online handle, that's still okay because they still wouldn't be able to recall the name.
can more than one character have the same online handle/alias?
Characters could share an alias, but not the online handle. Once it's taken, it's taken! Just like any other internet forum.
can characters change their handles or alias?
For aliases, no sweat. You would just have to comment on the
Factions Roster page so we can keep it updated. Or at least have a "default" alias we can put on there. It's possible for characters to just call themselves whatever comes to mind on purpose, but they should at least have one default alias as a kind of backup.
For usernames, it's mostly permanent, but let's say you want to change their journalname via a rename token. Then it is possible to change it. ICly, the character would have had to spend all half of their vial, though.
example? @_@
The whole name thing and username thing can be pretty confusing, so here's an example.
- Guy loses his name Let's take Guy from Tales of the Abyss. His real, full name is "Gailardia Galan Gardios", but he is also commonly known as Guy Cecil. Upon arriving into Aprigen, he'll find that he can't remember either name. He can remember Luke, Tear, Natalia, Mieu, even the guy on the corner of the street, but for the life of him he can't remember his names.
- Guy needs an alias. So he discovers he has a new name. It turns out from now one has to go by Johnny Yong Bosch JYB Albert. Of course, he could still call himself Kenny or Fonzy or something who knows what. But probably not his online handle.
- Now he needs an online handle. For his online handle, FontechGeek is chosen for him. While it is possible for him to also go by FontechGeek while outside of the network that might be just a little strange. OOCly, this means the character journal would be "fontechgeek".
- But a real Albert appears! So, what if a character who is canonly named "Albert" enters the game, you ask? No sweat, they're not from Guy's canon, right? original!Albert will just hear the name and be like "Hmmmm that name sounds familiar! Must be someone I know." He will have no idea that it's actually his name, and will continue on without any problems. No strange tugs on memories or anything like. It's completely glossed over.
- Canonmate Luke appears. All right, so what if Luke comes into Aprigen? Guy will have known Luke's name this whole time before Luke's appearance. In fact, he might have mentioned Luke to some other people. But once Luke steps through those magical pink doors, Guy will not be able to remember Luke's name. He'll still know who Luke is, but when he runs over to him, instead of saying "Hey, Luke!" he would automatically know Luke's alias and automatically replace it. The same would be the same for Luke. Luke would automatically call Guy by his alias, and they would both realize that something isn't right. All of their memories are intact but the name.
- All memory of ToA! Luke's name disappears and changes. This is also true for anyone who heard of ToA!Luke from Guy. All memories of the name only will be gone. If it's written down somewhere? Mysteriously scratched out beyond recognition. All trace of the name is gone. It will be replaced by Luke's alias.
- What about another character of the same name? Okay, what if Luke Skywalker came into the game before ToA!Luke and Guy is already blabbing about ToA!Luke? Luke Skywalker will have no idea that Luke is his name, so like the Albert example above, it's just glossed over.
- What if someone else mentions a different Luke? Let's say Guy mentions Luke to someone who also has a friend named Luke in his/her canon. Now, ToA!Luke arrives and Guy promptly forgets Luke's name. So after all this, the conversation they had might be remembered like this:
Person: Oh hey, I have a friend named Luke!
Guy: Oh yeah? ...Why are you telling me this, again?
Person: ....Didn't you have a friend named Luke?
Guy: ....No? [has forgotten all about mentioning Luke] But I have friend named [insert Luke's alias here].
Person: ...Huh...but...OH! Sorry, mistook Luke for him then. [leaves wondering what happened]
[both will forget this conversation and Guy still doesn't realize Luke's real name.]
From that point forward, the person will no longer remember the ToA!Luke's name and will go by the alias instead. This is also supposing that ToA!Luke has already arrived.
Long example, but it should have covered all of the important aspects. The name thing can be a little confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it once you actually put it into practice. It's also fine to refer to the character as their original name in tags, like "Guy says, 'I am the real JYB' or [Guy stares at Flynn and wonders why they look like twins] but if he's talking about himself, he would say "Hi, I'm Albert! Or at least that's what I'm supposed to go by, I guess."
what are these brand thingies?
They're just marks that are placed somewhere on the character's body that denotes what faction they belong to. Other than looking cool, they serve no other purpose at this time.
factions?
Characters will be part of a gang, or faction, that is based in the designated city. Your character will be automatically placed in one, either by player choice or random selection through the mods. They will most likely be placed in a faction that best suits their personality.
So for example, Squall from Final Fantasy VIII would not be in Carbuncle's faction, and would probably be placed in either Odin's or Leviathan's.
Characters can freely change factions after a certain time. They really just serve as big groups that characters and players can utilize to help build cross-canon CR. There will be more use for faction-based events later on in the game.
can my character start their own "gang"?
Sure! If Brave Vesperia or Team Gurren wants to form their own thing, that's perfectly fine. The only stipulation is that they can't form it outside of the faction. That is, they would be more like sub-gangs than entirely new ones. It is not possible to create a new, huge gang like the pre-existing ones.
is there a gang leader?
That's a good question. While one exists, no one knows who it is nor do they make themselves known. It is quite possible for a character to try and take over and be the main faction leader. In fact, they could claim themselves to be the leader and no one but other characters would contest it.
what if my character is devoid of emotions?
If you're afraid that your character is too indifferent, no worries! The whole emotional spectrum has been accounted for and divided up between the four factions, and Odin thrives on such emotions. If you're unsure of where your character would fit, the mods can choose for you.
If they ever need a certain emotion they most likely wouldn't have, like happiness, they could probably get some from someone else. It is possible to trade emotional drops.
explain the emotional drop thing again
Emotional drops are basically the currency for Aprigen. Instead of using money, everything is valued by emotional drops. To make things easier, however, any type of transaction and how many drops a character has can be assumed. It is also possible for characters to trade emotional drops with each other. There is no need to keep track of emotional drops because a) that's just too annoying and b) trying to keep track of when your character feels what is way too complicated and hard.
You can assume a character has enough, too little, or too much of a certain type within reason. For instance, a character like Cloud should not have an overabundance of "excitement" emotions because that just would not make any sense whatsoever.
Note: This is really just a gimmick to the game, so there is no need to read too much into it. Everything can be handwaved.
is it possible to fill up the vial in one day?
No, unfortunately it's not, and it will take a while for that vial to fill up. There is also no known amount. No matter how big the emotion, it will only convert and materialize as one tiny droplet, so it's quite possible that only ten drops will have accumulated in a day. Worse yet, a small amount is taken every so often by the ruling Eidolon. Add in any drops used for normal spending, and it's quite possible that the character only receives a net of one drop a day sometimes.
However, it is possible to fill the vial, and certain mod events will help regulate this. But it won't happen within the first weeks or even months. We are trusting players to not abuse this and realize that there is no easy way out to collect the drops.
...no really magical pink doors
Didn't we discuss this already? They're pink and they're magical, what more do you want? If your character didn't go through them willingly, it could be assumed the bunny!moogle conked them on the head and tossed them in there.
so are these esper things important?
Yes and no. They hold more plot relevance later on, but for now they're just kind of there and serve as a mechanic function. They create the weapon for the character. Characters are free to treat them like pets.
speaking of pets, can my character bring one along?
If it's canon, then yes. Like Simon could have Boota with him upon arrival. It is also possible to find a pet in Aprigen.
can i app an animal or any other non-humanlike character?
Yes and no. If the character knows how to at least talk, then yes. We could then assume they have a voice to text converter to help them with text posts. However, if they can't talk in canon like Repede or Boota, then they cannot be applied.
Robotic and android characters are also unfortunately not allowed at this time. This is only because most robot characters do not have emotions. However, if a robot/android character does have emotions, even if it's only a couple, then they can be applied for. You will just have to elaborate in the application on how they could work.
my character can have weapons?!
Yes, yes they can. They can either have one from Aprigen, or bring in their main weapon from their canon. No tanks or mechs are allowed, though, sorry!
what's this about blessings?
Just a little added effect. Each Eidolon will grant their people a certain blessing, as indicated
here on the IC Guide. They're kind of like stat boosts, but they really have no great bearing in terms of the game or how you roleplay. You can just keep in mind that your character might be a little stronger than usual or seems to attract more ladies or men than they normally did back home.
is there any power level cap?
Nope~ However, any god-like characters will still not be as powerful or stronger than the Eidolons and will not be able to destroy any of the cities. They may be able to cause some damage, but it won't make the Eidolons happy so we highly advise against that doesn't mean you can't do it. So we're trusting players to judge how far their character can go. We also will enforce the god-modding rule. Always be sure to ask player permission should your character come to a position where they might manipulate another character.
Also, if any large scale events happen like huge fights that could affect a large number of the game population, post it to
aprigen_ooc to give a friendly heads up.
and summoning powers?
To make things less chaotic, particularly for Final Fantasy characters, those who can summon any type of creature will not be able to summon them from their own world. This also includes any summons that are already integrated with the person or come from items. Those would just be sealed.
However, it is possible to form contracts with various summoning creatures of Aprigen. A more detailed page and information will be created at a later date, and characters will have the ability to summon later in the game.
So in short, for now, it is not possible to summon creatures, but in the future there will be possibilities.
what's the language of aprigen?
Pig Latin. Okay, that's a lie. It's actually English! So any native English speakers will have no trouble coming in. Of course, neither would any non-English speaking characters. They, too, will be able to understand, read, and speak English as if it were their mother tongue. It's automatically translated.
Characters will also have basic, elementary knowledge on how to read and type, even if they had never seen a computer in their life, let alone heard of one. This is one of the many gifts the Eidolons have granted the characters. Of course, players can have fun with their characters typoing and messing up due to lack of experience using such devices. Just because they have basic knowledge doesn't mean they're automatically typing geniuses or can read the Encyclopedia. Think of more third or fourth grade elementary level. So you can have fun with wrong words and typoing.
Some things are not translated, however, like certain language-specific keywords. For example, Japanese speakers may still use honorifics and titles, like "-san" or "-chan", but any other words will be in English. So "nii-san" would be "brother". This goes for all languages.
If there is a certain well-known phrase in another language, that can be used. For example, "mon cherie" or "itadakimasu". This is also for any character who deliberately says a word that is foreign to them. So for example, an English speaker who deliberately says "Danke" as opposed to "Thank You".
Accents will remain.
what do the npcs do?
The locals just kind of mill around and go on about their lives like nothing is wrong. How they behave depends on the city they're in, so keep that in mind. Characters can't really form any in-depth relationships or recruit them for anything. Just mild npc-modding interaction. Think of them like video game NPCs where all you can really do is talk to them and buy things.
can my character hold a job?
Yes they can, and that can also be a good way to get emotional drops. If they have a job, they will automatically get a small amount of drops added to the vial. What kind of emotion will depend on what location they are in. Most likely it will be related to the current city's emotional base, so if your character wants an emotion that's not in their city, they may need to take a brief trip to another city.
Note: There's no specific "job list", so really you can come up with whatever you want. Even if it's just being a clown. If there are any problems, we'll be sure to make note of it in response to the application.
what happens when a character is put on hiatus or is dropped?
They are put into a crystalized stasis form. If the character is dropped, not only do they turn into crystal, but they are taken to Pandora. Should that character ever be reapped, either by a new player or the old player, they will return back to normal. If the character is coming back in as a clean slate, they just come in like a new character, but with no memories of their prior stay. It is possible for them to retain their memories, but that is up to the player.
is it possible to fail or die in aprigen?
Yes, it is possible to fail the mission or an event, however this can only be done on purpose. That is, it was preplanned. There can be no accidental failures. By default, it is assumed that the character is progressing, just slowly with ups and downs. Should the character fail, the character is turned into a crystal for a week and is placed near the shrine of their faction for all to see.
Should a character die, they disappear into tiny crystals. However, they are able to be revived after a couple of days and will respawn somewhere in Diadora.
The downside of either of these two actions happening is their vial will be reset to zero, so they will have to start their emotional drop collecting all over again.
can we canon update?
Yes you can! Your character will be put in a crystal stasis for however long is necessary, and then will return in their updated form. It doesn't matter how involved the character is updated, they will come out as if they had experienced all the events.
you know, this reminds me of Final Fantasy and Alice in Wonderland.
That would be because Aprigen was created using various themes and motiffs from those series. There's a lot of Final Fantasy XIII influence, and as for Alice in Wonderland, it's more heavily based off Are You Alice? and the Syfy Alice versions. However, there are touches of Pandora Hearts and Heart no Kuni no Alice. There are also some elements of Durarara!! and Tales of. We probably could have added more, but we thought this was plenty.
...magical pink--
YES THEY EXIST QUIT THAT.
i have a question!!
If you have any other questions that weren't addressed in any other page here, feel free to comment and we will not only answer it, but add it to this list.
