Well as most of you know I started work as a cover supervisor at an all girl school last thursday. (A cover supervisor takes classes when the teacher is off sick or on a course) Thursday was teacher training and was basically listening to health and safety lectures and how to deal with unruly kids (which apparently the school is full of!) Friday was the start of term for the 7th graders (11 year olds) I swear half the class I was with were called Chloe, with numerous Aishas and Riyannas. Not a sensible name among them (unlike Coveney obv) I watched an art and an English lesson, both of which were quite fun and I'm sure I'll be fine taking either of these classes (if all else fails I can say "go read a book" or "go paint a picture") It's the other classes that I'm nervous about. Math, Science and PE. I think I'll be fine with the 11 year olds but this school goes up to 6th form. The idea of teaching maths to a load of 16 year olds terrifies me - especially as I can barely count to 10 without using my fingers!!! And that is the problem with this job, it covers all subjects! Thankfully the other Cover Supervisor is an athletic math whizz who is rubbish at art and spelling. I've already said I'll take the Art, English, History and Geography if she'll take the PE, Maths and Science. She seems happy enough with that. Phew! Anything else we'll split between us. I think we are going to be watching lessons and having training for another week or so but the reality is that a teacher can fall sick at any time which means I could be teaching 16 year olds as early as tomorrow. I could even be teaching Maths if two Math teachers or the other cover supervisor falls ill. Eeek.
I'll let you know how it goes...
