Best Prep for New GRE?

May 24, 2012 18:48

Has anyone studied for the new GRE? I am looking for the best way to study for it. I'd like to score in the 90th percentile.

I did Kaplan's on demand online course and I would recommend it to anyone. It's not that expensive and you can do it in your own time with plenty of practice sets and ways to track your performance and problem areas. I don't remember what percentile I scored in, but I do remember my score went up about 100 points in each category. It probably would have went up more if I hadn't tried to cram, so give yourself plenty of time to study and let it really sink in

i used the Kaplan study guide book/CD ROM for about two months before the test. It really helped a lot. i got into two different programs at the University of Chicago, and Columbia.

I also used the Kaplan study guide book. The questions are definitely harder than those on the actual exam (and some of the verbal questions are flat out ambiguous), make sure you take the sample College Board test after studying a bit so you know what to expect. I really liked the math overview index that was basically a list of rules/facts you need to know.

I only had time to study for a week, but I bought Kaplan's books for the math/verbal. I focused on math (I'm a science person) and did every single advanced problem in the book (+ all the practice tests, I think there were 6). For the areas I was more unfamiliar, like geometry, I did all the intermediate questions. I got 90th percentile in math and 88th in verbal [really, I gave myself like 2 days to crash-learn some vocab], and I'm going to Harvard in the fall.

Also, I'll second the person who said to take the CollegeBoard practice test. It was a really good indicator for how I did on the actual exam.

Oops, I swore I had replied to this on my phone - must not have gone through. Anyway, I was actually thinking of the ETS practice test, not Collegeboard, so turns out I'm not much help after all :\
