Thanks!
No, I'm not applying to comparative literature programs - I'm looking at Cultural Studies and regular old English/Lit programs.
I haven't seen a WHOLE lot of schools that require an MA, but at least two of the schools high on my list have such a requirement all spelled out. The linguists/History of English requirement (or strong recommendation) overlaps with these schools and a few others. The worst offender's website reads: "MA in English from an accredited institution with at least 21 credits in English and American literature on the graduate program and a graduate GPA of 3.5 or better. The student's training at the MA level or earlier should include a course in Bibliography and Methods of Research and a course in Old English, Middle English or the History of the English Language. The 21 credits in literature should be sufficiently varied in period and genre to assure reasonable coverage of the standard periods and major authors of English and American literature."
I might just have to drop that program for the list. I've only really started my research recently, so I hope I find more programs like the ones you seem to have found.
Good luck!
