GRE when to take it

I am planning on taking the general GRE this summer. The only concern I have is when to take it. I know that there will be a revised version start August 1st and I am wondering if I should take it then, or take it before August with the old version. The reason I am unsure is because I have read that typically scores are lower the first 5 years a new version of a test comes out. I am also worried that if I take it in say july and need to retake it I will have to study two difference versions.

All the books I have to study are for the revised version and not the current one. So I guess I should take it in August. My concern is that I know it takes a few months for the results to be sent to the schools and if I take it in August I will have to wait 60 days to retest if I do not do well.

I need a good score because my GPA is not very strong due to medical incidents that happened. I am trying to bring my GPA up, but I think it will be just short of a 3.0 by the time I graduate. So I want to make sure I have not only plenty of time to study for the GRE, but able to do my best to help my chances get into grad school.

Thanks!!
