U.K. Degrees

 Hi everyone!

I'm fairly new to this community, but I'm already impressed by how supportive and engaged everyone is. Exciting!

I'm looking at taught Master's programs in the U.K. (that will hopefully lead into a PhD) and I have a couple questions about the kinds of degrees available. I'll be applying to either English Language or Linguistics of English/Historical English Linguistics. I know that at some schools MPhils are like MA's plus a thesis, while at others they are just MA's by a different name, which makes me wonder about all the other degrees.

So my questions are:

- What exactly is an M.St.? Is it the same as a "studies" degree in North America? Do people take it seriously when you're applying to do a PhD?

- Can you still (if all the stars align) get hired into an English department with an M.Sc. if it's from a British school?

- Does anyone here have experiences applying to British schools? I took a look through the memories/tags and didn't find too much, but I have been known to be livejournal-inept in the past.

I feel like those questions are kind of silly, but I'm afraid of finding myself applying to a degree that isn't ideal for my aspirations. Any help at all would be appreciated!
