SOP help request ( applying to Computer Science MS)

Nov 07, 2010 16:09

 Hi everyone,

I have written a draft SOP.  I am really bad at essay writing. I need help to make my application not to be rejected due to my SOP, I have good grades and GRE ( 1420).

Please give some advice to me to make my SOP acceptable. I will spend whole next week in making my SOP strong and persuasive.

Until the day I went to watch the National level Athletics championship held at Guntur BR Stadium, with my father when I was in 7th class, I was like every other student in the school striving for marks in exams. But after I saw the competitive spirit and skills the athletes showed and victorious athlete’s satisfaction, I decided to become an athlete, they fascinated me. My parents encouraged me and I started practicing athletics form that year balancing my studies. I slowly climbed up the levels both in education and sports and enrolled in B-Tech in Computer Science & Engineering as a student Athlete. After 5 years of constant work at last in my 2 year of B-Tech I got selected to contend in All India Inter University Athletic meet in 2008. That gave me confidence that with constant practice and determination I can achieve anything I wish for. This experience also taught me that success is a journey, not a destination.

I was always a goal oriented person and I believe that I should use my life time to achieve something meaningful. When I entered into my B-Tech I started to see the influence of technology on Human Life and how technology is influencing the world we live in. I have witnessed how computerization of processes changed the course of our daily life from buying things for house hold to bringing office to home. I learned things fast and diversely and was amazed when I read articles of Foresight and OpenCog which portrayed how next generation technologies will transforms our lives. But after my selection to National level my coach planned for a one year dedicated training camp for my success in National Level. I discussed about this with my mentor and Head of the Department Smt. R. Lakshmi Tulasi madam, who helped me to delve into the situation to make a decision, it clearly helped and I dropped out of the athletics program and I have chosen Computer Science research as my future. I started introspection about what I achieved and what I am aiming for, I changed my concentration towards technology and then I realized how research results of science & technology changed this world I live in and from that moment I considered Athletics as a Hobby. I was voracious in filling my life with full of meaningful work. I realized that my life is more meaningful when my achievements will transcend the lives of future generations.

After my decision for future, I started to ponder over different CS areas for a mini project in my third year. My knowledge and perception of programming languages, Data structures and Database Management systems, Computer Networks, Operating Systems and Neural Networks etc, they all didn’t seem to me like complex end products, I wanted to do something complex and ended up with AI, which I see as the future revolution in machines that can think, just like how Human beings diverge from rest of the living beings on Earth. After choosing the area I want to work I looked for a problem to be solved, I ended up with an Intelligent Athletic Training scheduler which will produce Training workouts data that should be followed by the athlete by considering previous training details which is named SprintTech 1.0. I studied AI concepts of Intelligent Machines like Perception, Supervised learning algorithms. Decision trees. Ensemble learning and boosting, and reasoning under uncertainty, and especially machine learning. Neural networks, multi-layer perceptrons and applications. And also the concepts of Intelligent Machines:focused on problems in reasoning about action and rational decision making. Knowledge representation and logical inference. Planning: representation, search and heuristics. Bounded rationality, situated agents. I was helped by my Project Guide Sai Krishna sir and HOD Laksmi madam many times when I was clueless of what to do. It took me two years to develop two projects SprintTech 1.0 and 2.0 which form whole software called SprintTech.

SprintTech was accepted by my college athletic department and by SAP (Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh) coach Prasad Sir. It got 3rd place in National level software project competition. I received Achiever award for 2009 from JNTU for my work in the SprintTech project. I am still working on it to make in much more efficient planner by adding all new concepts I am learning. My future research plans are vested on Artificial Intelligence and to build autonomous agents that senses and acts upon its environment in the service of its own agenda. An autonomous agent with human-like cognitive capabilities is called my long term goal. By a "conscious" software agent, we mean one designed within the constraints of Bernard Baars' Global Workspace Theory of consciousness and cognition. The research revolves around the design and implementation of cognitive, sometimes "conscious," software agents, their computational applications, and their use in cognitive modeling.

The M.S Program at University of XXXXXXX will provide me with the necessary preparation to face these challenges. First, University of XXXXXXX will provide me with graduate-level coursework in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cognitive Science, and Probabilistic Neuroscience, which are necessary breadth for me to develop overall concepts and tools for my further research. Secondly, I will have opportunities to take part in research projects that are proactively investigating issues relevant to the Cognitive Machines of the Machine Learning. Finally, University of XXXXXXX’s multidisciplinary approach will help me develop knowledge that is needed to break rock hard problems of AI through Biologically Inspired models and Neuroscience and Mathematics.

After completing my graduate studies at University of XXXXXXX I hope to do some Inter-disciplinary coursework before going to PhD work that is vested in the development of AI systems. Due to the aforementioned reasons I am confident that the Computer Science program at University of XXXXXXXX will enable me to achieve these goals.
