Re: scores, 800Q is pretty much expected of engineers - the 670V is actually more impressive. It doesn't hurt to ask about a deferral since it sounds like he's not entirely sure this is the route he wants to go. He could also decline and reapply to this program along with others in the fall. For a one-year masters they probably won't hold it against him, but of course that's something he should inquire about when he asks about the deferral.
