Funding outside of department?

I am still waiting on one school and am on a wait list, but as of right now I have received only one offer of admission and I was notified today that I was not offered funding. It was sort of expected as I don't have teaching experience, I had pretty crappy grades (a 3.16), and did moderately on the GREs (570V, 610Q, 5.0AW).
However, since I am getting my MFA in creative writing, this isn't too terrible (since grades don't count for much except at schools that selectively fund, as I've learned) and I think that if I apply again next year (with a different writing sample) I will have a better shot at some of the more selective programs. The program I got into accepts about 10% but only funds about half of those.

Anyway, I know people here have talked about the possibility of getting graduate assistantships outside of their department. I don't really know where to look for this. Does anyone have suggestions? What are some places or departments that might offer such things? Will I even have a chance with my GPA? Should I be looking for for things like the library, residence halls, etc?

Thanks.
