Language question

Jan 13, 2010 00:47

Hello, applyingtograd! I'm a Communications major with an emphasis in teaching prep, which means that my B.A. would allow me to teach both communications and English programs in high schools. But since I'm in California and the budget crisis shows no sign of going away soon, I've decided that I want to get a M.A. in English and then get my credential.

A lot of my potential grad schools ask M.A. candidates to either have completed a year of college-level foreign language, or be prepared to do so upon admission to the program. I would like to do these classes now, since I have a feeling grad school's going to require my complete attention! Also, I'm a transfer student who acquired about 65 units before transferring to my current university.

My question is: do M.A. programs particularly care about where the language classes are taken?

I'm considering my alma matter community college, since the language programs there are pretty well-structured and they offer a semester's equivalent over the summer -- which is great since I'm a second semester junior and don't have a lot of time left. Or should I try to take these classes at my current university? If I do, budget cuts and unit limits aren't going to allow me to complete my degree on time :(

Thanks so much for your replies in advance, and may all of you who are applying for this fall receive your acceptance letters soon! ♥

Potential grad schools, just in case: UC Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz, CA), UC Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA), CSU Fullerton (Fullerton, CA), San Jose State University (San Jose, CA), and Western Washington (Bellingham, WA)

m.a., foreign language, english
