Hello all!
I was curious about the make up of this community of awesome we having going on here.
How many of you are applying straight from undergrad and how many people are taking time off? How did you make that decision? Those of you taking time off, what have you been doing in the meantime? Do you feel that you are a better or weaker candidate for it?
Those of you who are already in school, but grace us with your presence in order to answer all of our questions, what did you do? How do you think that path has affected your experience?
I've been out since May 2007. I decided to take some time off to recharge my batteries--I was afraid of a burnout. Now I work in textbook publishing. I'm going to put another year in (3.5 total). That way I'll have saved some $$ and established myself a bit in this industry before going to school (English PhD); then I will have a Plan B for the great humanities-job-market-that-isn't. I'm really glad that I've taken time off; personally I think it has made me a stronger candidate--I feel more focused--but it's been really hard to be out of school for this long. You?
The decision to go to school is so personal, and I find people's decision process really fascinating.
