Contact with potential advisor pre-application

I've decided what I want to do my PhD on, and have started researching and contacting potential supervisors and graduate program directors with a view to applying this fall. I contacted the graduate program director at my current top-choice several months ago with some questions and a brief discussion of what I'm interested in and who I'm interested in working under, and he responded very enthusiastically. He even sent up a follow-up email saying that he had forwarded my email on to the potential advisor, who had mentioned his high opinion of the program I'm currently at.

Two weeks ago, I contacted the potential advisor, with a longer discussion of my interests and some more specific questions that he would be the one to answer. I haven't heard anything back yet, which is somewhat worrying, although A) it is summer and B) he's on research leave. He's also a fairly prominent scholar.

I know this is the crappiest of all times to try to get someone to respond to an email, especially in my field where a lot of researchers travel to collect data. However, does anyone have recommendations of what to do assuming he doesn't reply soon? My current plan is to send a follow-up "Hey, I emailed you a month ago" email in a week or so.

following up, contacting potential advisors
