I just wrote a really, really long response and my computer crashed on me.

Short version:
- In Canadian history programs people tend to expect something which is more research proposal than SOP.
- Play to your strengths - sometimes that means a lot of personal information but 99% of the time it means the opposite.
- Most personal stories aren't helpful because many people share very similar stories yet don't pursue graduate work. If you want to talk about stories you need to be able to explain why it is that it matters.
- SOPs are short. Be concise and don't waste words.

Are you planning on applying to Trent?

Yeah, my plan is Trent, U of T, York (as a last resort because I'll have 2 degrees from them already)and one more (just not sure which one yet).

I have approached people from U of T and York to work with, both have said yes. And I've got a contact name for Trent and I'm preparing something to send to him.

My SOP reads more like a research proposal, I was concerned it wouldn't be good enough.

Thanks for the advice!

I am going to Trent for my MA (history) starting in September - so in about six months I can hopefully answer some questions about the program itself, but if you have any questions now about the application process (or the SSHRC and OGS application process) let me know and I can give you my e-mail address. I can also read your SOP if you need help with that too.

My e-mail address is chris902 (a) gmail [.] com.

If you could respond to this post when you read it and then just note my email somewhere so I can delete this post that'd be fantastic. (I'd just prefer not to have my e-mail left here indefinitely.)
