Hello! A small question about good times to take the GREs...

Hi there, applyingtograd! I'm very sorry for the trouble, but since I plan to apply to grad school in the foreseeable future I thought you folks might be able to lend me a bit of assistance. I have just completed my B.A in History, and am looking to get a Ph.D in the field. My area of interest is the relationship between African-American intellectuals (people such as Frederick Douglass, Richard Wright, and other such luminaries) and religion from the end of the Civil War up to now.

I was told it might be wise to hold off from going to grad school immediately and actually take a year off--aside from a rather stressful 4 years at my college, several of the professors and advisors I talked to told me it might be helpful to spend a good year taking care of my applications, learning a foreign language (a requirement at several of the programs I'm looking at), and studying for the GREs.

Thus, my question is this: For someone wishing to matriculate during the 2010-2011 school year as opposed to this 2009-2010 school year, what would be the best time to take the GREs? Or should I feel free to take it as soon as possible? Thank you very much for your time.
