GRE Retake?

Two years ago, right after I graduated college, I spent a really horrifying amount of money on a GRE class and got a 1220. My best math score ever, and my worst verbal. My verbal score, consistently 100 to 200 points higher than my math in practice, was THE SAME as my math score on the test. That said - I will probably never do that well on the ( Read more... )

I think you're probably fine. I got 1100 (720V 380Q!) and got into an excellent English PhD program. Save your money and use it to apply to two more schools!

With a 1220, I doubt anyone will throw out your app. I've heard that anything over 1200 in the humanities/social sciences is just fine. Granted, the rest of your application will almost certainly be more of a deal maker/breaker. For reference, I got a 1240 and was accepted to 6/8 programs in physical anthropology, and wait listed at a seventh.

BUT

As far as funding goes, the higher the GRE the better. If you rationalize it that way, spending an extra $140 (or however much that effing test is) can pay off really big in the end.

From what I understand, the GRE can either hurt you if you have an extremely low score and can help you if you have an extremely high score, as long as you breach that first threshold you're fine.

You guys are awesome. Thanks so much. I figured a low score would disqualify you and a high score would pretty much throw you in the same pile as everyone else - I think barring a change in lifestyle that doesn't require me to work 12 hour days I'll keep the score and aim for amazing SOPs and recs. Thanks so much!!!
