Personal Statement

I've posted this here before when I was applying to a grad program, and this is the new revised version that I wondered how it looked before sending it out to more schools

Personal Statement

I grew up the oldest in my family and was the one everyone from my mother to my youngest sister turned to for advice and assistance. I knew growing up I always wanted to do something in the field of psychology. From my mother’s daycare, school, and my family I saw the effects life had on families and young children. I saw the benefits that came from working through one’s issues and I knew that I wanted more than anything to be the one coaching people through their struggles.

In 2005 I enrolled in University of xxx. My freshman year I found an organization on campus called Sexual Assault Behavior Education Response or SABER for short. I leapt at the opportunity to join an organization that was dedicated to educating the Martin campus and community about sexual assault prevention, domestic violence, and why everyone should expect equal respect in their relationships. With SABER I have gone through 5 peer education training seminars and have twice completed the seminar to gain a certificate as a BACCHUS GAMMA peer educator. SABER has now changed its name to Peers Advocating Responsible Relationships and I am the president of the organization after having served as treasurer for 3 years. Through PARR/SABER I have given presentations over dating violence to sororities, classes, various organizations, and even high school students. But despite my training, when people come up to me after the presentations I can only give them general advice and direct them to the local services that I know of. Every time I am in that situation, it only serves to strengthen my desire for more knowledge and experience to give to the people that clearly need help.

During the summer of 2008, I volunteered in the Cognitive Psychology lab at The University of xxx under Dr. xxx. During this experience, I realized how interested I was in attending your university and joining your student body in such a beautiful and thriving atmosphere. Although I decided the cognitive side of psychology was not for me, the University of xxx further strengthened my emotional bond to professional counseling. For this reason above any other, I hold this summer experience as my fondest work experiences and yet another reason why I am convinced that your university is where I want to learn and receive my Master’s in Community Agency Counseling.
.

Thanks in advance!
