I don't know why you would be offended. I used quotations to imply that that was a belief generally, not literally better.

So if everyone I talk to thinks the west coast is better, where does that leave us?

One side of the country is not better than the other for any reason. Both sides have great schools, although many on the east coast are more prestigious which is a huge plus for a lot of people. I'd say you have an advantage on the west coast by being able to go to a great school with lower tuition.
