Okay so, after last time I pretty much deleted everything and started over again.
For the sake of background info, I'm applying to MFA programs. Right now my SOP is WAY too short for two of the schools requirements, and okay for three. So any suggestions to make the thing longer would be welcome.
Thanks guys.
As an MFA candidate, my main short term goal would be improving my fiction while building upon my existing writing portfolio. Coming from an undergraduate program in screenwriting, I have experience when it comes to intricate character development and carefully coordinated story lines. I am also very fond of, and excel at, writing dialogue; however, I know that after four years focusing on just screenwriting, there's room for improvement within my prose. I took as many writing courses as I could at my undergraduate University that were outside my core curriculum, but they proved to be big in size and short in length. I think my fiction requires additional workshop attention before it's at a publishable caliber.
Adding on to my writing portfolio could be achieved through the wide variety of classes XXX offers. In particular, the joint courses offered to both Publishing and Creative Writing students. I think it's fantastic that the Creative Writing Program works so closely with the Publishing program and I want to be a part of that collaborative effort. I have always enjoyed writing for magazines and newspapers and believe that while at Emerson I could work on cultivating publishable work for these mediums so that upon graduation I could possibly pursue publication or work in those fields.
In addition to a possible career in magazine writing, I am also interested in teaching. My senior year at XXX, I was a tutor. Specifically I was a writing tutor but I also at times tutored underclassmen who were having problems with liberal arts courses in film and literature. XXX's assistantships and class in Teaching Freshmen Writing interested me. I think that class and corresponding experience working at a place of higher education could help prepare me for a career in teaching should that path be open to me.
A graduate education at XXX will help me diversify my writing portfolio, strengthen my fiction writing and give me the skill set I need to make what I feel is the next big step in my career.
