Since application season is heating up, (oh my fucking god, I just realized August is almost over...!!!) I was just curious if anyone else is a second timer like myself? Last year I applied to phd programs for history, 100% shut out. Ouch. Adding salt to the wound, in a post rejection survey I repeatedly received comments from profs using phrases like, "you were reeeeeeally close, I'm sure another school took you.... right?"
I did early decision for undergrad, got my acceptance earlier than expected during Thanksgiving, and it was a super painless, quick process. Did anyone else notice that a) February suddenly became the longest month and b) rejections always seemed to go out Friday afternoon around 4:55? that neauseating feeling I got every time someone I knew said, "yeah, so they called accepted students last night..." Has anyone learned anything interesting as a result though? I learned that:
people say they don't care about the GRE, but that's a load of crap because they really do care... Everyone loves US history, and I have no idea why it's the most popular... Professors love hearing the words, "I read your last book and found it quite thought provoking..." Timidity gets you nowhere. By Thanksgiving, I was stalking reccomenders in front of their classes and sending emails saying, "Uh yeah, deadline's tomorrow!"... Acceptance is a strictly: don't call us we'll call you affair and if I hear nothing... fuuuuck.
Trying to get myself excited, though. But just in case, when would be the appropriate time to just throw in the towel? For pride purposes, I'm telling myself "this is it. Last time I'm doing this." but then again I also said I was only going to have 1 cupcake, and that was about 3 cupcakes ago...
