so I just got a very exciting offer to travel on a funded scholarship, but in accepting, I would have to quit my job. I am in the middle of applications, and wrote in all of my SOPs that I was working at this job; moreover, I wrote about how the work was important to the research I intended to pursue as a graduate student. hmm this is a bit of a toughy...

i'm assuming you have sent in the practical majority of your applications? also, I'm assuming that your current job is full time?

i think it sort of depends on how long you have had the job. if you have only had it for a short while, then it may look like you can't commit to something for very long...

if you have had the job for a while and have known that you wanted to go to grad school then it should be fine. also, i'm assuming this travel scholarship is for a relatively short duration (e.g. summer 08)??

in general, i think it would be a pretty good bonus to your application to show that you earned this scholarship to go abroad... go ahead and tell schools that you are taking the opportunity to go abroad before you enroll in graduate school! (which unfortunately means that you will have to leave your job a few months early). either way you will be leaving your job in the next year right??

and i would recommend that you should send a note to the schools, if you do travel. (try to amend or update your application package)

good luck!
