word limits

If I am 20 or so words BELOW the expected word count for a statement of purpose, will that count against me very much?  I just don't think it would read as well if I added even more to it.

They ask for 1000 to 2000 words, and refer to it as brief.  I'm confused anyways.  I'm at 981 or so.

I think you're probably fine. As long as you've answered their prompt, on the short side is probably way better than being too long.

I agree, you will be fine. Its better to be concise instead of wordy. And the adcom will love you for this - it gives them less work!

ohhh, you are applying to Maryland right now-- I'm writing mine too...I can't believe they consider that brief either-- its so weird to have so much breathing room for a personal statement!
