Spacing?

All of my SOPs have a page requirement, but not a spacing requirement.  Should I be assuming single spaced?  Double spaced?

Double spaced tends to be easier to read, so I'd go with that.

I've always heard single-spaced. The reasoning, as I understood it, is that its not an essay one needs the space for grading, so it's more professional single spaced.

I don't think single spaced looks professional, but that's just my opinion.

I assumed double. That's how I've written everything since, oh, 5th grade and I'm assuming that's how things are to be written in grad school. Also, I'm applying to psych programs so I'm doing everything in APA style -- which means double-spaced.

Methinks this community needs an FAQ with community consensus for questions like this.

In general, assume double-spaced. However, if they don't specify, you can usually get away with single-spaced if you need to. If it's really important to you to be sure, call the graduate secretary. They will not (and cannot) put a black mark on your application for asking small questions.

Especially if you don't identify yourself!

I used single spacing unless otherwise stated. I needed the room and I only use double spacing for editing/commenting purposes usually? Who knows though!

I'd just like to point out that one application for a sociology PhD program specifically asked for 1" margins.
