I hesitate to post this but am so frustrated that I at least have to share it, even if no one can give any constructive advice.
I sent packets to my recommenders with postage paid envelopes to send to the schools. These are extremely responsible people, law professors. I followed up after a reasonable length of time, partly because I had additional information to send them.
One professor had lost my resume and asked me to send it again. So I did. He then replied that he had lost the entire package I had sent him (at a cost of $10 just for the postage involved, not to mention the materials used to put it together) and asked me to send it again.
I am extremely disappointed by this. I understand LORs are not priority #1 but this man has a secretary and is a law professor. I am wondering what this signals for the letter itself - is my trust that he can get it together warrented? Maybe he doesn't really want to write this letter after all? Then there is just the pragmatic question of how do I make sure I don't have to keep sending materials over and over again at my own expense?
Of course, I told him I'd send it out right away. I did ask if there was somewhere better to send it than the lawschool (excuse was that his office is being torn up for building repairs), so maybe I can send it to his home and it will be safer. If he offers that, that is. Its just frustrating after the entire debacle I had to go through to secure good letters in the first place. And with deadlines looming (two weeks for preferred for most of my programs).
Grrr....
