one more question.

I'm applying to 10 schools. I'm happy to fill in the other schools to which I am applying on all of my applications, but they tend to have 4-6 fields for them. How did other application-happy people choose which schools to enter?

i chose the "less prestigious" schools.

If they see that they are the worst school you're applying too, they will get the impression that they're just a safety and you don't really want to go there.

I always wrote "I perfer not to disclose that information" in answer to that question. I thought that telling them could only work against me.

I went middle of the road with those questions... filling in schools that were not overly prestigious but also not safetys.

I chose schools that were most similar to the school in question, and reinforces the types of research topics you addressed in your SOP. My field is pretty small, so by doing it this way, certain schools would probably trigger the names of specific professors -- i.e. "Oh, she's obviously applying to XXX to work with YYY." I think it shows that you've done your homework and are clear about your goals, and not just applying to a number of random schools, scattershot.
