lack of recommendations

Aug 22, 2007 22:39

Hi all. I'm applying to MFA writing programs, but I have less than stellar recommendations. (I kept to myself, and never made close connections with my professors.) Any advice on alternative recommendations or addressing the issue in my application?
Thanks, and good luck to all.

I'd like to second the question. I'm in a similar boat.

Yeah, sorry I don't have advice for you. I'd kinda like any suggestions on what to do when you've been out of school for a long time and no longer in contact with any old profs - I finished undergrad in 1995, took 4 years off then finished MLIS in 2000 and have moved to the other end of the continent since then! I'm sure I could get prof. recs but nothing academic any more

Creative writing? From what I know, 90% of the application is the writing sample.

I'm applying to the same types of programs, but was able to find a few professors. First, if you don't already have it, go buy The Creative Writing MFA Handbook by Tom Kealey right now. He will answer all the questions you might possibly have.

One piece of advice he has for recommedations is to remember that ALL professors are fair game, not just writing professors. Many people applying to MFA programs didn't even study writing in undergrad, so the committee will be used to seeing recs from your bio and anthro teachers, too. Also remember that a teacher can be anyone who has, at some poitn, supervised you while working and being given responsibility. An emplyer does this, as does a volunteer coordinator that knows you well. Even an editor for the local paper you freelance for, as long as they can focus on your work ethic and academic ability, not just your writing ability.
