Beeb's annoyingly incomplete reporting

Nov 20, 2007 20:13

So, as I sweated at the gym, I tuned into a BBC broadcast. There was a story on Cairo's homeless children, receiving some help through foreign NGOs to bathe & feed them...the younger ones held by Oliver Twist-style gangs of older youths drugged on bags of whiteout.

Definitely a heart-rending story, but the thing that kept striking me about the story was - "where were the girls?" Apart from one opening shot, there were no girls featured in the story at all. I don't know if this reflected Egyptian custom, that there are few girls on the streets, or there are few girls who can access these NGO services (and are otherwise bonded to indescribable labors). In the absence of information, the imagination veers to the worst.
