Saturday Wrap-Up + Film Reviews!

I got off my lazy duff early this morning and headed on in to the Farmers' Market. It was even raining fairly strongly, but I decided it would be best to go by foot. Sure enough, got there without too much difficulty, and besides all the rest I bought, I ended up buying an entire box of enormous peaches ("Fairfield"? "Fairweather"? Somesuch variety. Nominally a Freestone variety). I've already eaten 3, and I really should stop there.

Unfortunately, delayed laziness returned, somewhat earned by my hauling back the box of enormous peaches plus another 20lbs. of groceries, plus an umbrella. This delayed laziness came in the form of giving up my plans to hit the gym later that morning, for which Heather phoned & berated me.

At least I made up for that by an hour-long cycle ride^ to the Four Star cinema on Clement, reached by going up Valencia, up Market, into Duboce, through The Wiggle, to the Panhandle, into Golden Gate Park, and out onto 23rd Ave, straight up to the Four Star. Couldn't have been more perfect, reaching my seat just minutes before the double-feature (just $7.00! Woot!) of:

  • The 11th Hour - Essentially a series of interviews with Nobel Laureates, major scientists, captains of industry, academics, tribal leaders, and experienced activists who state their opinions on the state of the environment, how it is human crisis, and what can be done about it (in broad strokes). Leonardo DiCaprio was actually palatable in this film of his, and it was far less preachy than I was expecting. If anyone wants a quickie overview of the general state of the environment, this is as good a place as any to start. e.g. put it in your Netflix roster.

Oh, incidentally secritcrush, quite a bit of footage from Arup.

  • and

  • No End in Sight - significantly less depressing than I was expecting from the title, and basically goes over the combined criminal negligence and blatant ignorance at top levels of the Bush administration and Paul Bremer's CPA leading up to, during, and following the invasion of Iraq. It just reminds me how badly the US needs to arrest these people and try them for their crimes.

  • ^In which I steadfastly ignored my aching knee. On my way down the stairs to my garage, my left foot slipped, but I stabilised by drawing more strength from my hand which was still on a door knob, and my right knee ... which then started to hurt for the weird weightshift. I hope nothing seriously bad has happened to it, I'll have it checked if it still hurts tomorrow.
