1. To the US Senate, all I can say is
Bollazo! Bollazo! 2. In a reprise of (Wrath of) Khan's final moments,
Castro spits in the eye of the Bush administration, arguing that biofuels initiatives threaten global starvation. On the whole, I think it's a slightly odd tack to take, since Cuba seems to have done alright by its own self-sufficiency efforts.
Interestingly, I remain quite suspicious of the arguments from Lester Brown and others about recent tortilla price spikes in Mexico linked to corn diversion to ethanol production in the US. If there is any connection, it's spot market profiteers, playing on the perception more than the reality. I really should see if there is a also a price increase in animalfeed and pork bellies (above inflation) - then I think the argument may hold water.

4. Franz, you had better get your sleep in now, because chances are, a year from August,

MC Rove? Clearly this has to be the final nail in the coffin of rap-as-black-urban-proud-rebelliousness. I still shudder at the photo.
7. I know
what King Abdullah of Saud has to say is important and all, but I swear he looks just like a
stock character out of Tintin!
8.
USPS launches Star Wars-themed postage stamps in May - I post things in the US so infrequently, that I was actually shocked by the price for postcards abroad.
9.
This crime recalls the dodgier aspects of overseas living, especially in heavily urban societies.
10. Interestingly,
this Swiss/Thai insult case doesn't seem to be gathering many headlines in the Swiss papers.
11. More

San Francisco's homeless tallied, and more about the reported 2% increase.

Maradona back in the news for yup, you guessed it, substance abuse...including excessive eating and smoking. He certainly did look more 'filled out' in the sidelines of the last World Cup.
