Iraq War by the Numbers

Mar 20, 2007 19:01

US KIA: 3,135
US Wounded: 23,530
Iraqi deaths: 34,452 (UN number)
Iraqi deaths: 56,574-62,296 (Iraq Body Count)
Iraqi deaths: 100,000-150,000 excess (Iraq Health Ministry)
Iraqi deaths: 655,000 excess (Lancet study)

US desertions: 3,000 (up 25% on preceding year)
5,000 (if includes desertions who were quietly discharged)

NPR reports on this desertion number

On the whole, I wonder how this desertion rate compares proportionally, to past wars. The NPR report pointed out that at its peak, the annual desertion rate during the draft-enabled Vietnam War was 30,000.

Also, no numbers yet on PTSD cases, but the NYTimes is at least covering some of the trauma and rape for female US soldiers

Still, a very interesting, if saddening, graphic of the violence in Baghdad since 2003

Also, the NYTimes on just how stretched the 82nd Airborne is.
