Wine Review: Vina Alarba 2002 Calatayud

Feb 19, 2007 23:32

Lovely Spanish red from Pago San Miguel. It's a blend of Garnacha and Syrah which is perfect on a cooling evening like this. I have never been disappointed with Vin~a Alarba.

The rear label describes the wine as:
In spanish, the word, Pago, refers to a particular vineyard. Pago San Miguel is located high on the slopes of the mountains tha trise above the province of Calatayud. At 2,600 ft, in elevation the days are warm during the gorwing season but the nights are very cold.

The soils in the vineyard are poor and covered witha thick layer of slate stones which helps to conserve the scant rainfall. Gnarled old vines, planted in 1921, produce a meagre 5 pounds of grapes per vine. The Garnacha and Syrah were separately (sic) to retain their unique characteristics; the wine was then blended and aged for 6 months in new French oak barrels.

Aromas of ripe peaches and dark fruits such as plums, cherries and blackberries are balanced in the glass by hints of chocolate and sweet spices. On the palate you will fine a well structured wine, meaty with sweet tannins and long finish. - Jorge Ordon~ez
