1) Do you use a bookmark or turn down the corner of pages?
Bookmarks, which are anything from a post-it to a credit card to a pencil. The thicker they are, the more easily they fall out.
2) What was the last book you finished?
Disgrace by JM Coetzee and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, almost simultaneously.
3) What are you reading now?
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy (for gender and genre) and Three Poets of Modern Korea by Yi Sang, Hahm Dong-seon, and Choi Young-mi (for comp lit). About to start Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison (for the black novel) and Ideas of Heaven by Joan Silber (in preparation for the collection of shorts I will be writing for my capstone project). Busy busy.
4) Favourite genre?
Um...I guess literary fiction, to be broad. Also 18th-century chick lit.
5) Least favourite genre?
Romance I guess. Lame formulaic thrillers. Dry non-fiction.
6) Favourite authors
Jhumpa Lahiri, Michael Cunningham, Margaret Atwood, JK Rowling!, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters.
7) Where do you read?
In chairs, on couches, in bed, inside, outside, in moving vehicles, in class, while walking when pressed for time. At home, school, cafes, etc.
8) Can you read whilst walking?
Yes'm. When I was little and my mom too me to the mall, the first thing we'd do was buy me a book and then I'd walk around for the rest of the day reading it. She could never understand why I didn't fall down. Granted she can't drink out of a bottle while walking, so she's a poor judge.
9) One book you always recommend to people?
Harry Potter. I've converted many. Also, The Namesake and The Handmaid Tales.
10) Books that are so bad they’re good? Secret shameful reads?
My Sweet Audrina and The Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews. I went through a phase of reading her, and those are all that remain.
11) Open the book nearest to you, turn to p45, third sentence down:
Shone between the thatched straws of the water mill. (From "The Last Face" by Hahm Dong-seon. Actually the third line of poetry, but I do what I can.
12) Excuse for filling out a pointless meme?
It's about books and I didn't quite feel like starting my take-home French mid-term.
