She gets that on some level she's damaged.

Not damaged goods the way that Ben in high school talked about the cheerleaders, not damaged the way that some of the people she's seen walking around Chicago are. But, a normal person doesn't exactly turn to hooking when the world ends.

Or maybe they do. Mike says it's the only normal response to an abnormal situation, and that they're earning an income when most of the rest of the world is still scrounging for something to trade.

"We're ahead of the curve," he says, taking a hit. He's lazing on one of the couches in the gallery, feet up against the back of the couch, and Beth finds herself sitting on the floor next to him, watching him for lack of anything better to do.

"You've had way too much," she says, and reaches out for the bud. "Gimme."

When he hands it over, she shares with Candy until it's gone and Candy's painting her toenails.

"I don't really mind it," Beth says. "Is that weird? Like I don't really think it's the worst thing I've done. I mean, all things considered, it's only brought me security and a place to live."

"And us," Candy says, finishing Beth's big toe.

"And you," Beth agrees.

Humming, Beth drowses off.
